This section will cover a growing list of miscellaneous research activities undertaken either for interest or at the instigation of friends or colleagues.
The Tsunami modelling project was an emotional response to the events of 2004 and the involvement of close friends, Barry and Mary Toomey, in the aftermath. I feel certain that many of the current models for tsunami generation and propagation need more scientific scrutiny and hope that this makes a positive contribution to the subject.
An astronomical curiosity was the result of observations made while 'exiled' alone in Sri Lanka. Every evening I went up to the roof of the apartment building and watched the sunset in the fervent hope of seeing the elusive ‘green-flash’. The position and precise timing of the sunset aroused my curiosity as they did not quite match the results that would be expected for the “Equation of Time”.
